New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
